The Mazique Town House; 407 Martin Luther King St. The Mazique family-owned extensive property including Oakland Plantation and China Grove.
August and Sarah Mazique, with financial support of a white neighbor, purchased China Grove Plantation in 1870, There they built their residence, grew cotton, and operated their own gin.
Through hard work and determination, the Mazique’s and their children prospered, creating an African American planting dynasty in Southwest Adams County and eventually purchasing Oakland, where the family had earlier lived as slaves.
